Flip Start 1.0 Review
Pity the poor UMPC. The much-hyped ultramobile PC has been hailed as the next big thing for a couple of years now, without ever turning out a product that comes close to being useful in real-world situations, thanks to clunky interfaces, high prices, and poor battery life. The $1,999 FlipStart E-1001S (from Vulcan, a company started by Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen) is substantially different in form from two other recent UMPCs we’ve looked at, the Asus R2H and the Sony VAIO UX390, but it still shares some of the same frustrations with input interfaces and performance. We have yet to find a UMPC that crosses the line into practicality, but the clamshell FlipStart is in some ways the most useful of the bunch, offering the most traditional laptop-like computing experience. Lenovo 3000 V100 0763 Review
When we reviewed the small-business focused Lenovo 3000 V100 almost a year ago, it was among the first of a group of laptops we came to describe as “bulky ultraportables”–laptops that sought to incorporate the hefty feature set of a thin-and-light in a case bordering on ultraportable in size. Since then, the field has become a bit more crowded, with not only the entertainment-oriented Dell XPS M1210 but also the Toshiba Satellite U205 offering a comparable set of features in a similar design. But the Lenovo 3000 V100’s $999 starting price still makes it one of the least expensive models in its class. And the fact that Lenovo has updated the V100 line with the latest Core 2 Duo processors, larger hard drives, and the option for Windows Vista warranted a second look. Based on our $1,699 review unit, we’d say that the Lenovo 3000 V100 has kept pace with the times, continuing to provide all the features you’ll need for work (and some play) in a highly portable package. Acer TravelMate 2480-2705 Review
The sub-$600 notebook is a rare beast, and the few Windows Vista models we’ve seen at or around this price have been acceptable, if less-than-stellar, performers. In much the same mold, Acer offers five slightly different fixed-configuration versions of the 14.1-inch Acer TravelMate 2480, the company’s entry-level business laptop. The models all sell for around $550 and–if the model we tested is any indication–should be suitable for Web surfing, basic office productivity, and light multitasking. Acer TravelMate 2480-2153 Laptop Review
The sub-$600 notebook is a rare beast, and the few Windows Vista models we’ve seen at or around this price have been less-than-stellar performers. For Web surfing, working with office documents, and playing DVDs, however, a budget laptop such as the $549 Acer TravelMate 2480-2153 provides enough power for generally satisfactory computing experience. This 14.1-inch model even manages to add unique design touches such as an ergonomically curved keyboard to help it stand out from other inexpensive systems, like the Gateway NX270S and the Everex Stepnote VA4101M. Though there’s a lot to like about the Acer TravelMate 2480-2153, the Gateway NX270S’s strong battery life makes it our current favorite for budget laptops.
